Pharmaceutical companies are embracing ambitious environmental strategies, with Novo Nordisk leading the charge through its “Circular for Zero” initiative, aiming for zero environmental impact. Dorethe Nielsen, head of Corporate Environment Strategy, oversees efforts across the company’s global operations. Novo Nordisk’s approach includes reducing material use, designing for reuse, and piloting takeback programs, such as one in Denmark for used injector pens that achieved over 30% return rates. Despite regulatory challenges, recovered materials are repurposed in other industries. The company also tackles scope 3 emissions, which account for 96% of its total emissions, by collaborating with suppliers to promote low-carbon practices and renewable energy. Sustainability is integrated throughout product design, though patient usability remains the top priority. With circularity, emissions reduction, and supply chain partnerships, Novo Nordisk exemplifies how pharmaceutical companies can reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining effective patient care.
