Smart packaging can keep food fresh and support a circular economy

As global food systems evolve, packaging plays a key role in reducing waste and ensuring food safety. Aseptic cartons, like those from Tetra Pak, preserve perishable items without refrigeration for up to a year, supporting food access in areas with limited cold chain infrastructure. Made mostly from FSC-certified paperboard, these cartons have a lower climate impact compared to fossil-fuel-based alternatives. However, challenges remain in achieving a circular economy. Tetra Pak invests €100 million annually to improve recyclability, including material simplification and paper-based barriers. While some countries like Belgium have high recycling rates, global efforts are inconsistent. Tetra Pak is investing over €40 million per year to enhance recycling infrastructure, including facilities like the new polyAl recycling plant in the Netherlands. Ensuring commercial value for recycled materials is critical, with innovations like transport crates and pallets made from recycled polyAl showing promise. Technology and consumer engagement are also essential in scaling these circular solutions. Learn more about this idea.
